Current state of progress.

29. december 2005

Its working!
Now a number of functions of the model can be controled by the remote controle. :)
But still with the the wires connected and turned off transmitter part.
The pump, all outrigger motors, outrigger cilinders, boom cilinder and swing are functional.
Now its time to organize the wiring.

For the CNC machine I ordered several parts so I can use it with aluminium.
The revs where to high and working with aluminium didn't result in something I wanted...

21. december 2005

In the weeks before I have been wrestling with the modules.
I discovered that the Robbe Futaba F14 transmitter has a lot of radio power.
The modules get crazy from it!
So now I will make a wire between the transmitter and receiver and see if that works, without modules switching when they want and not when I want them to switch...
In the mean while a lot of time is lost because of it.

26 October 2005

Today the mailman brought the switch modules I ordered.
To be able to control all functions of the model I needed switching modules.
After a long period of deep thinking, I decided to go for the RC8plus base print and the ERW-4MS optional print from Modellbau-City.
And the switches for the transmitter.
But then two of all!
A BIG investement...
On a later moment I will explain how I think to use them and for which function.

RC8plus gives 16 switch channels and 4 proportional channels over one transmitter channel.
The ERW-4MS module can switch 4 motors (2 directions and stop) and 4 proportional channels.

I have to read all documentation so give me some time to explore everything!

I had to think some time about how I would make both SSL arms.
Demag didn't use a normal recangular profile but a different form.
Because of the dimensions of the arms it was not possible to make them from solid material, it would get to heavy.
So I had to bend sheet metal myself.

I formed two strips of 1mm thick metal over a length of 90 cm.
After that I welded both strips together over the full length.
The result:

From this side it looks like a normal profile.

On the other side you can see both welds.
The first rough grinding is done.

And the result with the welds on the left top and the right side.
After this more grinding has to be done ofcourse.
Then I will cut of the two parts I need and connect them to the rest.

(The pictures show a distorted view)

The next step was the link that is moved by a cilinder and pulls the SSL upright.
Thanks to Richard I had enough picture to start working on it.

These are the motors, 10mm in diameter, that will drive the cable drums of the SSL.
21. July
2005

On the moment I am working on the SSL unit.
I have a lot of pictures and a few drawings, but not every detail is on them as clear as I would like.
There seem to be different versions of the system, that makes it more difficult.
Here two pictures of this moment.

2005

Its time for the next update.
After a great Modelshow Europe are here the most recent pictures of the model.

As from 2005 the model has the livery of De Gier from Rotterdam.
The change has had several reasons.

On the frontlawn with fully extended main boom.

During the Modelshow europe the model had a wheelloader on its hook, the same like the real crane during the Openhouse of Kuiken-Cramat.
Complete with working signallight on it.
Unfortunatly the SSL and the ballast adapter plate aren't ready yet.
The sheaves are on more then 3 meter hight!
With the boom in an angle of 85 degrees.

The counterweight, good for 13 kilo!
All plates are separate and have the same form as the original.
On the moment I am working on the telescoping mechanics.

After that I will instal the electronics needed for the Remote Control.
I will also start working on the SSL unit and the detailing of the total model.

14. April
2005

One week to go for the modelshow in Eelde....

I am working every minute to get the model in top state for the show.
It won't be ready but in a better state then last year.
The livery has changed and that is the reason why there haven't been any resent pictures of the model here.
After the show I will make it up to you all.
This is how the ballast looked like one week ago...

I asure you its looking better now and its lying on the frame on the back of the crane.

Now you can see its going to be a model crane. :-)

6. February 2005 I made the out sticking points on the ballastplates.
Also I made the lifting points in the side of the plates.
Now the several parts have to be combined, prime them and spraypaint.
As soon as they are in the basic color I will put here some pictures.
First I am working on the normal counterweight, in a later stage the extra blocks and plate will follow.
1. February
2005
The project of the AC350 has not stopped!
It is only on slow-motion.
Other things demand a lot of my time.
During the Modelshow Europe you can see the new livery of the model.
And for people that can't be there I will show it here.(after the show)
September 6, 2004 Since a few weeks I am the proud owner of a CNC millingmachine.
By feeding a 3D CAD drawing into its notebook, it makes the part automaticly.
Great machine but it takes a lot of my building time.
July 11, 2004

The arm is working as it should, so work can go on!

Last week a delivery man brought a package.
Looking at the mans face it wasn't the biggest but shurely the heaviest for him today.

It was the ballast kit.
Everything beautiful laser cut, something which would have taken me a year.

Here an overview of the parts making the different plates.

As you can see all plates are made of several parts to get the right shape and thickness.
In a week I will start drilling the holes in them and finnishing them.

June 15, 2004

I didn't go to the openhouse of Convoi.
But I played a litle soccer with my son. (playing soccer for the first time in my life!!)
And i went down and teared a muscle in my right elbow.
Now I am the proud owner of piece cast around my right arm for the next week.
Then some exercises....

No working on the crane or going out to take pictures. :-(

June 12, 2004

Just yesterday I ordered a company to cut the counterweight plates with CNC Laser.
They said that it would take 12 working days to be ready.
I can't wait to see the result!

Maybe I will go to the openday of Convoi but its a three hour drive, one way.....
You can see the pictures here when I have been.

On the moment I am working on the SSL unit and the undercarriage suspension.

May 4. 2004

The modelshow of Geldermalsen is now more then a week ago.
I can look back on a very succesfull day.
Many visitors came at my table and showed a lot of interest.
Here are some pictures.

February 12, 2004

At this moment I am working on several parts at (almost) the same time.
These parts are:

-The counterweightframe
-Hydraulic system
-Plating of the undercarriage
-The telescoping system
-The wirering
-Both cabines

The hook and the counterweight plates are also on the To Do list.

Depending on the drying time of the paint and glue, and the received information and materials, I am working every free moment on the model.

This to let everybody see a recognizable crane model on the show in Geldermalsen in April.

The next weeks there will not be many new pictures to keep the suprise.

Hereby I want to thank the driver of the Convoi AC350SSL for the support he is giving me with detail information!!

December 15, 2003

Here the first picture of the boom head.

And the base part of the boom has got some more details on it.

november 21,2003

I couldn't resist to put the boom on to the superstructure.....

To get an idea of the size I put a tin can on the model.

I have planned to fix the boomhead to the boom this weekend and make the sheeves for it.
I will be putting several details on to the boom.
For example the SSL top cilinder mounting, cable guidens rolls etc.

As you can see on one of the pictures I received the cable.
It has 7x19 wires in it and a diameter of 1.35 millimeter.

november 9, 2003

Unfortunatly I haven't been able to do much work on the model the last month.
The time I had, I had to make to telescoping mechanism new, because of to big tollerances I didn't work good.

I have done some work on the boom sections as you can see on the pictures.

To get an idea.

october 12, 2003

Last wwek I have been working on the telescoping mechanics.
Everything goes as I planned, it only takes a lot more time.
But better slow than make things three times before they work.
It will be a while before I can show new pictures.

In the meanwhile I placed the cabine doors.

I have also been to the openhouse of the Terex Demag works.
It was a wonderfull time and I saw everything and took pictures of it all.
Only I am not allowed to put them on the site......
More in /Aktueel/ for now only in dutch.

september 19, 2003 I am sorry no pictures at this time.
On this moment I am busy with the technics which will move the different parts of the telescopic boom.
I haven't had much time to make great progress.
But next week I will visit the open house days at the Terex Demag factory in Zweibrücken!.
As soon I have got time I will put some (of the propably hundreds) pictures on the site.
28 august 2003

The first two boom sections.
83 cm lang per stuk

Pictures of the superstructure.

23 august 2003

Last week I have been busy forming the plates into the desired shape.
These pictures show the raw shapes.
The profiles are to long and need more work.
The ends are deformed because the "brake" was to short.
On both longsides I have to remove a strip to get the correct measurements.

On the last pictures you can see the outer section as it will be, only a bit shorter.
It is 8 centimeters wide, 8.5 centimeters high and 100 centimeters long.

I have also done some work on the superstructure, more info will follow soon.

15 august 2003

The sheet metal for the telescopic boom is waiting for me at the metal company.
Next week I will do an attempt to form the metal on a length of 1.1 meter.
As soon as there is more to see, you will find it here!

9. august 2003

Today I did the first tests on making the boom myself.
Here you see the first results.

These parts are 10 cm long, max.
The boom parts will be about 80 cm long.
