Conrad Terex Demag CC8800 1/50
With e-motors

During to openhouse days of Terex Demag in Zweibrucken last year I bought a model of the CC8800.
The model is made by Conrad in Germany.
Once at home and set up I realised it was big, very big!

This isn't a normal model inscale 1/50, it almost needs its own room!

As you can read on another part of this site, I am thinking of motorizing an 1/50 model for a long time.
The CC8800 makes it easy because of its size.

After a lot of thinking and motivating e-mails from a Taiwanees mail contact I decided to go for it.

The plan was to put the motors inside the winch drums and make as less modifications on the original as possible.
That meant that the motors had to be small but strong.
I ended my search at Faulhaber motors.
Insiders know that this project was going to be expensive.

I decided to put the swingmotor in the superstructure.
By doing so I had to make some consessions to the looks.
But the advantage is that there is no wiring going from the undercarriage to the superstructure.
And that I could use a powerfull large motor, there is not much room in the undercarriage.
Specially because I wanted to motorize the tracks.

All wiring is connected to a D-sub connector in the superstructure, where the control box can be plugged in.
That way I have possibility to add radio control and put it in the motor/cabin unit.

All winches have a motor inside and work independent from eachother.
During testing I saw that the lack of detail gave troubles with the SL boom threads.
It was not possible to keep both threads without slack.
To fix this I made the tensioner working like on the 1:1 unit.

The control box has switches.
I wanted regulators but that would have resulted in a delay in the construction and extra costs.

There is a spot reserved for the track switches.
But I came to the conclusion that it wouldnt give more value to the model but a lot of work and risc of track failure.
And anyway who has enough space to drive around with such a big model? I don't!

The modication took a lot of time, money and effort.
When I see the crane swing around or erect the boom it is very impressive and makes it all worth!

I replaced the plastic discs for the brass version.
During testing is discovered that the groove is not as deep as in the plastic discs.
The wire jumped out of the groove very easy wich is very annoying.
In the following crane I won't replace all discs, I will check the plastic ones that stay so they will work properly.

I am also working on other pendants to replace the original ones.
But first I have to do some work on the AC350!
